A guide to the microwave Do's and Don'ts

The busy schedules and on-the-toes life make people unable to prepare a proper meal for themselves. Here’s where the fast cooking and heating appliances come to the rescue. One such new-age addition is a Microwave.

It is a go-to kitchen appliance in which food has been cooked or heated by passing electromagnetic radiation. These radiations are called magnetrons which are formed inside the vacuum tubes present in the microwaves.

Microwaving food is no less than a pleasure for busy people - put some cold food in and get yourself a hot, delicious meal in just two minutes. But since microwaves are a bit different from ovens and other heating appliances, it is essential to learn some practical things before investing in them.

Here’s the guide to the Do’s and Don’ts to know before getting started with IFB Microwave.

Do's

  • Make sure to wipe out or clean the interiors and exteriors of your IFB microwave at regular intervals, to not let any germs, grime, or dirt accumulate and contaminate the food. You can easily clean them using baking soda, lemon juice, white vinegar, or dish soap.
  • Whenever you keep a bowl of food in the microwave, keep a regular check on it. Since most of the outer part of the food & the corner edges of the food is burning hot, and the inner portion remains cold, you can pause the cycle and stir the food in between for the best results.
  • Before cooking a pre-packaged ready-to-cook food, read the instructions carefully. Each of the food items requires a different cooking time and temperature, thus go through the steps carefully before cooking if you do not want to spoil your food.
  • You should cover your food in a way that is slightly open from the corners. Let there be a little ventilation for the food to breathe. Just keep the lid lightly over the food and do not cover it completely.

  • Use glass, ceramic, or any other type of microwave-safe material to cook and eat the food in, as they are free from any chemicals and will not explode due to the enormous amount of heat produced in the microwave.
  • Be a little cautious while opening the lid of the food box or container in which you have cooked the food as it must have produced a scalding amount of heat which can be harmful to the face if came in direct contact.
  • Be a little careful while defrosting or cooking packaged items such as; hotdogs, pork, beef, poultry, etc., in your IFB microwave. Prefer cooking them in their original containers and don’t forget to remove their plastic sheet, foam trays, or other packaging items before putting them in the appliance. Also keep a regular check on the same, as the thin cuts on the meat skin and beef will start to cook early, thus giving a burned or charred taste.

Don'ts

  • Never put items such as aluminum foil, paper bags without suspectors, travel mugs, hard-boiled eggs, and hot peppers in the running microwaves.
  • Do not place any metal objects inside the microwave oven as it can create a spark. These objects include stainless steel utensils, pans, pots, plates, bowls, and dishes having a metallic rim.
  • Do not use plastic containers in the IFB Microwave such as margarine bowls, salad bowls, whipped topping containers, and others, as they contain BPA which can melt or even contaminate the food or liquid there in the container.
  • Do not turn on the microwave until and unless you have something to cook, heat, or defrost. As, if there will be no food or liquid to absorb the magnetron rays emitted out, then the radiation tube can get damaged.
  • If you face any issues such as the door not closing properly, the door wrapped or bent, or the latch of the microwave door is broken, do not use your microwave and call a technician for help & repairs.
  • Disposable cups made of styrofoam cannot withstand any heat, thus you should not microwave them.
  • Hard-boiled eggs should not be kept in the microwave as the heat of your IFB microwave can create steam in the egg and it may crack.
  • Never microwave fresh fruits & vegetables as they cannot withstand such a high density of heat. If done so, the fruits & veggies will explode thus creating a huge mess.
  • Do not leave your food uncovered, as due to high heat pressure it may spill out; hence, making the interiors of your microwave dirty.

Over to you!!

These are some of the dos and don'ts that you should know while operating a modern-age appliance.
